LAXSTARZ is HYLA's advanced program for boys and girls who have completed at least one season of our LAXKIDZ program but are not old enough or ready for HYLA's regular league, which starts with second graders. It is our second innovative program intended to teach the skills of lacrosse to younger children in a fun and imaginative way.  Children as young as 5 and as old as in the first grade [6-7]are eligible to participate.  During each sesson, LAXSTARZ participants will play a game based upon the unique lacrosse game known as Chumash.  The game, named after a California Indian Tribe, involves a single goal placed in the center of the field, which is surrounded by an inner crease circle and then an outer and larger oval circle [see illustration above].  Our version will be called HYLAMASH.  Play will be totally non-contact and will include both boys and girls.  Games will be supervised by coaches as well as an official.  All participants will use the smaller fiddlestick-type crosse and soft balls.  Cost per participant is planned to be $30 and will include a t shirt.  A minimum number of participants, to be determined by HYLA, must register for the program to go forward.   SIGNUP FOR LAXSTARZ WILL BE DURING HYLA'S REGULAR SIGNUPS AS LISTED ON THE SCHEDULE.  Online registration is not available.  More specific guidelines for the program, which are subject to change, are below, however complete rules will be explained at the start of the season:

1.  Participants may be as young as 5 and as old as in the first grade [6-7].  The program is for both boys and girls who have completed at least one season of HYLA'S LAXKIDZ program.

2.  Laxstarz sessions will be held on each of the 6 regular HYLA gameday Sundays as listed on the schedule, weather permitting [see below], with a seventh and final session on Fun Day. Sessions will start promptly at 12:00 noon,   All sessions will be held on the at the Memorial Field Complex.  Participation levels and scheduled games determine which field(s) will be used.

3.  Players will use the smaller type of stick [crosse] commonly known as a "fiddlestick".  Only the specific HYLA approved stick can be used.  Players must have their own approved stick [no regulation size sticks] in good condition to use [there will be no loaner sticks for this program]. Sticks will be available for purchase at signups.  Soft balls will be used.  There will be no other player equipment needed.

4.  There will be no Laxstarz sessions when  the air temperature is below 40 degrees, the wind chill temperature is below 35 degrees, adverse field conditions exist, or if there is sufficient precipitation, in any form, at HYLA's exclusive determination, to warrant cancellation.    In the event of threatening severe weather such as heavy rain or lightning, during a session, it will be concluded.  Laxstarz sessions that are cancelled or end due to weather will not be made up. Children should be dressed appropriately for outside weather activity on colder days.  A parent or guardian must remain during the entire session so that children can be picked up promptly at its conclusion, as games are scheduled to start immediately after the Laxstarz program.  HYLA cannot assume responsibility for unattended children.

5.  All sessions shall be boys and girls combined, with no form of contact or checking permitted.  There will be no goalies and score will not be kept on the field.

6.  Each session will begin with a warm up period of 5 minutes.  Players will be divided into teams with six players on the field at one time, three offensive and three defenseive.  Each team must have a minimum of two substitutes.  Each game will be comprised of two 15 minute periods, running clock, with a 5 minute halftime.  However, play will end no later than 12:45 regardless of the game clock.

7.  First possession will be determined by a coin flip.  The team on offense may advance the ball by running or passing, however if the official determines a player is holding the ball or stalling, he or she may require the player to pass the ball within 5 seconds, or possession will be lost.  If a defending player gains possession the ball shall be passed to that team's offensive players within 5 seconds.  Shots may be taken on goal, but must be from outside the oval crease.  If a goal is scored, the opposing team will be awarded the ball.  Other rules and penalties will be explained at the start of the season and are subject to change as HYLA shall determine to improve both safety and the game experience.

8.  Though not involved in the Mudsock tournament, Laxstarz participants and families are welcome and encouraged to participate in HYLA's end of season Fun Day celebration.

9.  These guidelines and the Laxstarz program are subject to revision at any time, as HYLA exclusively determines.
